Right Royal Rugger
It was a rugby game worthy of living up to its name and one which delighted its sole royal spectator, the Sultan of Negeri Sembilan, Yang Pertuan Tuanku Muhriz ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir, who wore a very nifty cap.
His Highness watched the finals of the 19th NS Royal Sevens 2017 which saw Kuala Lumpur's Singa FRC defeat Singapore Cricket Club 17-14 in the club league category after Singa FRC raced to a 17 to nil halftime lead, proving too much to chase down for the southern visitors.
SCC fought back gallantly in the second half joust and came within a whisker of winning, scoring a late, last minute try, but it wasn't enough and Singa FRC added their name to the prestigious trophy.
The tournament saw 32 teams, 16 from the club league and 16 from the school league, compete in round-robin games over the weekend to gain a place in todays finals.
Local team NS Wanderers have dominated this popular 7's competition over the 19 years racking up 8 wins but didn't have what it takes to make the final this year.
The School league was also a great tussle and in one of the finals between local Senawang school SDAR and visiting South African team Islamia College from Capetown, SDAR snuck in front with a 15-10 win over their international competitors.
The Yang Pertuan couldn't help but quip to the Singapore Cricket Club captain as he received his runner-up trophy that, "You are a cricket club but play rugby?", which drew a smile from the forlorn captain.
All jokes aside the Yang Pertuan enjoyed the finals cheering and applauding the feats of some of the players, in particular the acrobatic plays of the three Fijians playing for the Singa FRC club.
The tournament is hoping to grow bigger and attract more International teams and players which all helps raise the levels of all the players.
