Seafood delights

Ampangan is a predominantly Malay suburb in Seremban and a well-known destination for those yearning for either Minang food, a wide array of Malay/Thai influenced-cuisine or hard-to-find exotic kampong-dishes.

Now it’s added another delectable choice of “makan” to its regional palate – quality fresh seafood.

Restoran D’Teratak is fast becoming the go-to destination for fresh, homely cooked seafood, served in various cooking styles – tiga rasa, or your choice of steamed seafood with asamboi, lime or cili api  (birdseye chilli), sweet and sour style and the quintessential  barbecue style with sambal.

Patrons choose their own seafood and can watch their meals being cooked through an open concept kitchen which is the focal point of the restaurant - a bamboo designed wall that divides the dining and kitchen areas.

“I went to the jungle, chopped the bamboo, brought them back and built that myself ” said owner, Syed Sahidan bin Syed Zainal Abidin, 42, pointing at the bamboo divider. Sahidan is the visionary entrepreneur who opened the restaurant in Nov 2015 when he saw the opportunity to expand his business ventures.  For a number of years he was the main fruit supplier to several hypermarkets in Seremban.

Born in Baling, Kedah, Sahidan left home in his early teens and practically raised himself, finally settling in Port Dickson.  He did odd jobs here and there but remembered his first real income was washing dishes at Medan Ikan Bakar PD for five years.   To this day, the owner is still his friend and mentor but it was that initial exposure to the food business which kick-started Sahidan’s entrepreneurship spirit.  His passion and determination to succeed was recognized when he was awarded Usahawan GBBS 3 times in a row in 2008, 2009 and 2010 by FAMA for his Gerai Buah-buahan Segar business.

Now, he runs Restoran D’Teratak with his wife and four daughters and a staff of about ten. “My own family background was challenging.  I stopped going to school at ten years old.  I didn't want to make that a reason for not succeeding.  Everything that we do will have risks but if we don’t try we will never know if we can succeed,” he says humbly. "I’m glad that I have my family with me and their support.”

His wife, Yurmida binti Yurnalis agrees and nods with a smile, she is the main cook at the restaurant.  “We are training our second daughter, Sharifah Shuhada 19, to take over full management of the restaurant.  “She’s been doing well but most importantly, she’s determined and enjoys her role.”

And that spirit of dedication by all of the family members is showing results.

Every night Sahidan wends his way around the dining floor engaging with customers both new and old, because it’s not just business for him. He truly believes it is a social accountability and a responsibility for him to deliver a pleasurable experience for diners.

The restaurant is clean and has a warm and inviting atmosphere with diners coming by the dozens and leaving satisfied. The choice of food is varied and the price is very reasonable with specials on offer for low budget diners.
