Negeri Sembilan Hockey received a major boost recently in what officials say may be the start of a golden era for both Negeri Sembilan and Malaysian hockey.
Not only has the 2016 league ( MB's Cup) seen a record number of 30 teams entered, the competition was given an extra lift when Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Hassan doubled the prize money on offer and undertook responsibility for the entire organising cost.
Negeri Hockey Association had budgeted for RM 27,000 for the prize money but Mohamed increased it to RM47,500 as he feels it will aid in the development of the sport in the state which is a nursery for talented players, in particular the schools.
"I am pleased to note the record number of entries and also happy to see so many schools taking part, " he said.
The competition kicked off on Saturday and five teams make up Division One while 20 teams will be placed in four pools of five teams in Division Two. The Ladies category will also field five teams and most games will be at the Seremban 2 hockey stadium.
