Malacca says good bye to plastic

It will be BYOB (Bring Your Own Bag) in 2016 for shoppers on Friday in Malacca after their state government declared a total ban on plastic bags made from petroleum by-products at all supermarkets and shopping malls.

Malacca had already trialled and set in place a “No Plastic Bag Day” on Fridays and Saturdays but the ban now is substantially increased to include stall holders and street hawkers using polystyrene packaging.

Datuk Md Yunos Husin said that from Jan 1, consumers will have bring along their own shopping bags or the cash counters will supply them with biodegradable bags made of plant-based materials.

“Our landfills and drains are filled with paper bags and this doesn’t serve our ambitious plan to be a fully green state,” he said.

Let's hope Negeri Sembilan can implement something similar to help permanently eliminate the permanent and detrimental effect plastic bags have on the beautiful forests, parks, gardens, beaches and streets in the region.
