Malaysia’s political situation remains fluid amidst confusion

Kuala Lumpur, July 9: The political crisis in Malaysia continues as key members of UMNO give various statements on the action of UMNO President, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who released a statement in the early hours of July 7th.  He was cited saying that the party will no longer show their support to the government under the leadership of current Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. The statement was made at a press conference at 1am following a 5-hour meeting.

Members of UMNO have released individual statements causing speculations of discord among party members. Most notably former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who said to Astro Awani that the result of the Supreme Working Council (MKT) Meeting last night did not mean that they’re leaving Pakatan Nasional but rather that they are withdrawing their support to Muhyiddin as Prime Minister. Najib said that this is to give way to an interim administration with a fixed term and goals to resolve the Covid – 19 epidemic.

Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, the Deputy President of UMNO released a statement on Facebook following the meeting citing that no individual is bigger and more important than the party or the rakyat.

Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa however has claimed that Ahmad Zahid acted alone and the statement made was prepared prior to the meeting. He was quoted saying to Agenda Daily that the announcement made by the UMNO President does not reflect what actually happened in the five-hour long meeting.

The bombshell announcement has left the political situation remaining uncertain until the next parliamentary seating which is scheduled to be held on the 26th of July until the 2nd of August 2021.
