Hopes for badminton gold tatters after Malaysia double Aaron-Wooi Yik fall during semis

TOKYO: The dream of a gold medal in badminton was shattered when Malaysia men’s double pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik lost to the might of China’s Li Jun Hui-Liu Yu Chen during the semi-finals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic on Friday.

Despite having defeated world number one Marcus Fernaldi Gideon-Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo in the last eight on Thursday, they failed to keep the momentum going and fell 22-24, 13-21 to Jun Hui-Yu Chen at the Musashino Forest Sport Plaza.

However, the Chinese players did not have it easy in the first game as the Malaysians led before finding themselves level on scores for four points from 19-19. A mistake made by world number nine Aaron-Wooi Yik had allowed Jun Hui-Yu Chen to romp home 24-22.

On Thursday, the pair delivered a great game and stunned world number one Marcus-Kevin, gold medallist at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, 21-14, 21-17 in the quarter-finals. – BERNAMA
